Under the iconic Big Top at Atlantic Station, Cirque du Soleil has made a triumphant return to Atlanta with “Echo,” marking its first new show since the pandemic. The seemingly familiar exterior of the giant big top conceals the transformative experience that unfolds within.
Introduced to Atlantans on November 5, this two-hour-long production is a captivating blend of technology, catchy live music, and Cirque du Soleil’s signature acrobatic performances. Performing five nights a week for 11 weeks, “Echo” carries a powerful message of hope, harmony, and curiosity to its captivated audience.
The narrative of “Echo” revolves around a girl named Future and her dog, delving into the profound impact of the human race on the planet. The show’s central element, a remarkable 12-ton cube designed by Es Devlin, stands as the production’s wow factor, allowing “Echo” to showcase its theatricality with modern twists.
In this production, a notable presence of Black and Brown talent adds depth to the exploration of the symbiotic relationship between people and animals. The performers, embodying various animals, skillfully captivate the audience with their extensive physical training and acting prowess. The circular stage becomes a playground for performers, allowing them to play with physics and musicality, offering an interactive experience from every angle. Unlike its predecessor, ‘Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities,’ “Echo” actively encourages engagement with the audience, fostering moments of laughter and applause.
Notably, “Echo” introduces the use of masks with aerial artists, reflecting the troupe’s commitment to evolving safety standards in the post-pandemic era.
Scheduled for its final performance on January 21, 2024, Cirque du Soleil’s “Echo” promises to be a must-see experience, seamlessly blending visual flair, dramatic music, and acrobatic prowess to create an unforgettable evening of entertainment.
