Ricky Stenhouse Jr was able to pass Joey Logano on the final lap and secure victory in the NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500.
As the race neared its conclusion, Daniel Suarez went off on lap 198 causing a caution that sent it into overtime.
Stenhouse took the lead in the race after Kyle Larson made a push. But, an incident between Austin Dillon and William Byron sent it into overtime with two laps remaining.
Logano pulled ahead of Stenhouse in overtime, but Christopher Bell rallied Stenhouse back into the lead with an incredible push. Just as Travis Pastrana and Aric Almirola threw another wrench to bring out another caution, Bell took control with another huge push.
Stenhouse had already claimed victory when the white flag flew and his race was declared over. As such, he was declared the victor.
Stenhouse noted that the first overtime was won when Kyle Busch reached the bottom and I was able to push Logano [Larson]. We had an incredible run. “I had hoped we’d reach the white flag there, but we didn’t. So I knew I had to go for the top.”
Stenhouse has not won a NASCAR Cup race since 2017, though he did win at Daytona during the mid-season race. This is his third career win – all three coming on superspeedways.
It marks the debut victory for JTG Daugherty Racingsquad.
