Taco Mac teamed up with CalyRoad Creamery to host ‘Brews Moos and Wine’ an event that was unique in many ways. First we have TacoMac, a south east restaurant chain that is well-known for sports wings, beer, and burgers. It started doing business in Atlanta over 30 years ago. Then there was CalyRoad Creamery of Atlanta who are the first artisan cheese makers located in Sandy Springs. They both worked with beer and wine distributors to offer a whole host of beer and wine pairing with cheese.
There were seven tables of cheese, beer, and wine. Here are my top three favorites:
On Table 1,CalyRoad had put their gruyere cheese that was paired with Ironmonger Brewing Company’s Strawberry Merlot Blonde. The wine paired with these two was Bougrier Rose d’Anjou. I was impressed by all three of them. Ironmonger, a local brewery in Marietta, used fresh, hand-picked strawberry and merlot infused with oak chips in our amazing malty blonde ale. The blend was very refreshing – fruity but not too zesty.
Rose D’Anjouwas a sweet rose wine –crisp and dry. The cheese was a hard yellow that was sweet, but slightly salty.
On Table 7, CalyRoad had a sample of Little Stone Mountain –a homemade, aged goat cheese. This was paired with a fantastic white wine – Opolo Summit Creek Zinfandel. The wine is heavy bodied with hints of cherry, chocolate, and velvety tannin with a smooth finish.
The beer pairing was Ironmonger’s Cherry Kriek– a lambic style beer that is perfect for non-beer drinkers. The taste of this beer is equally sweet and tart.
Last item on my top three is Table 3. CalyRoad Creamery had a sample of limited Manchego cheese paired with a Spanish beer called Red Courtesy. The wine option was Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria that was intensely fruity and smooth, making it a very good combination with food.
The beer was unique with respect of the bottle, the taste, and the region. You can easily mistake this beer for a champagne or sparkling wine. Aroma has super dry saison-like taste.
Overall, the event was very informative. If you like wine, cheese or beer, it had something for everyone. One of the many things I liked was that they got non-beer drinkers to try out non-traditional beer, like the seasonal and tart types.
